144 Club

"Knowing the times tables fluently helps children to develop their learning in maths because they can take that knowledge for granted, which frees up cognitive space for them to learn new mathematical ideas and apply maths to solve problems.” (Jo Boaler - Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University)

At Christ Church Primary School, we offer children in Y2-6 the opportunity to join an exclusive club called ‘The 144 Club’. To be a part of the 144 Club, children need to prove that they know their times tables. Once a week, children will complete a times table grid of jumbled up multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. To join the club and gain their 144 Club badge, the children will need to progress through each level and complete the challenges in under 8 minutes. There are 3 different levels from Bronze to Gold and each level will have to be successfully passed 3 times before moving onto the next one.

The key to successfully completing this challenge is practice, practice, practice! With practice will come rapid recall of multiplication facts that will help within other areas of the Maths curriculum. Successful children will be celebrated in our achievement collective worship on Friday afternoons.

Tips for helping your child to learn their times tables:

  • Regular practice (at least 3 times a week)
  • Demonstrate
  • Chant / sing songs
  • Stick up a chart
  • Play games
